Thousands of runners are hitting the streets for the 38th annual New York City marathon today, with more than 37,000 runners expected to participate in the world’s premier road race.
World record holder Radcliffe, running her first marathon in two years after taking a maternity break, won in an unofficial time of two hours, 23 minutes, nine seconds.
As a veteran of 16 such marathons I find the ruling incredulous. My best marathon was a tad bit over three hours. My worst and first was 4:24. On average I ran them in about 3:20. Not bad, but certainly not good enough to drive a brand new car home, though a sprinkling of trophies are boxed up somewhere.
The 28-year-old Shay was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation during the men's 26.2-mile (42.2-kilometer) trials before being transported to Lenox Hill Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:46 a.m., USA Track and Field said in a statement.
For 9 of the first 18 miles he did it, too. The pace varied from 4:26 to 5:15 per mile during that time, with most of the surges being thrown in by Ramaala.The Olympic Trials is traditionally a day of celebration, but we are heartbroken.
Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia, winner of the last two New York races, finished third in 2:26:13.
